Gebirgsjäger Raid in the Arctic - The Arctic Front 1944
Between 1941 and 1944, the Front in the Arctic was known to consist of series of raids, small battles and skirmishes. One such raid occurred in the Murmansk front on 2 February 1944, when elements of the 1st battalion, 143rd Gebirgsjäger Regiment raided a Soviet position on Hill 858. The raid can serve as a practical example of how the fighting on the Arctic Front took place during the Second World War. Find out more in this video.

Thank you for covering these lesser known smaller unit actions during the war. Most documentaries just cover superficially the big events that lasted for months, like operation Barbarossa, giving them detail like this makes those events much more interesting and it really makes one understand how huge these conflicts were.

Great video! My grandmother fled Vaivara village just before the battles started. She was a small child at the time. Her family home was used as the base of operations by the Germans and all the villages you see on these maps were completely razed to the ground by Soviet artillery. Several of the village names are misspelt in this video though. Not that it changes anything in the story, but i thought id mention it. I guess that might not be the video creators fault though, but the source material itself might be flawed.

The belgians had more than enough men, time to prepare, AT guns etc etc and performed very poorly in ww2. They did as little as possible to cooperate with their allies and once the fighting started were far more defeatist and less willing to hold their positions than the early French reserve B formations. Quite poor.

Knispel was also known for giving other tankers in his unit credit if there was any doubt as to the kills. So his actual number of kills might have been much higher. That, coupled with his lack of interest in military bearing (sloppy uniforms and preference for facial hair) was probably what kept him from getting the Knights Cross.

Brilliant. Just what I needed. We have just moved to Saint-Manvieu - living just around the corner from the Perron part of the map. I didn't realize that there had been such an engagement here. I haven't had time to research what happened around here in June 44 and so your video has been a perfect find just before the 80th D-Day anniversary. Tomorrow being May 8th, I'll wander up to the British cemetery to pay my respects and see if I can learn some more. Thanks for the clear presentation.

My son has taken a great interest in his great grandfathers war in the 11th battalion of the Durham Light Infantry who was at Dunkirk then later wounded fighting at Rauray under Captain Nicholson. This really helps me understand what’s going on in Ukraine right now. As you stated at the outset, most depictions of combat in this theatre are depicted at either the operational or strategic levels, and doing so often fails to convey a sense of how it felt to be there, on the front line.

The Franco-Belgian Military Accord of 1920 - was a defense pact signed between France and Belgium . But in 1936 as Belgium cancelled it and returned to a policy of neutrality . As not to antagonize Germany , Belgium would no longer co operate with the French military to plan a defense . The result was that the Belgian's shot themselves and the French in the foot . .

I would like to put a different perspective on the demise of this tank. There were only 2 Tigers lost at Stavelot, number 105 which crashed into the house at Rue Haute Rivage and 222. If anyone knows of another please share it with us Its mentioned that that a platoon of tank destroyers was present to assist the infantry, The 743rd tank battalion also had units in Stavelot assigned to the 117th Infantry Regiment. Baker company had a platoon of M4 Shermans + 3 105mm howitzers present. There history states they encountered a Tiger tank at close range, an accompanying M10 quickly fired a shot which bounced off the front, Sherman B15 also fired 4 rounds into the front of it which also bounced off. If you look at pictures of Tiger 222 it clearly has 5 shell strikes to the front, none penetrated. It also has a hit to the gun recoil tube. They state the tankers established a roadblock and later that day the Tiger was taken out by a shot to its vulnerable rear armour, Pictures of Tiger 222 show the 5 shell stiikes to its front, the gouge to the recoil tube, another 3 strikes to the front left side which also bounced off before the two shots to the engine which stopped the tank, so 9 hits which bounced off then 2 which penetrated the engine. If someone has additional information on this issue please share it, thanks.

First ,the number casualties in germans mountain troopers has been over exaggerated ,second ,amount of dearh varies wounded casualty reported claimed indicate that plenty wounded would or were definitely killed during or after actuin finish and there fore clearly victims of a clear crime of war first time ANZAC comit these crimes Hand to hand or not the so few casualty on one side (australian and NZ) verys the large claimed number on germans shows abnormalities. No other war actions such from ww1 or els were these disparity in ratioos losses . Also base in historians research The 5th Gebirgs-Division suffered a total of 262 KIA and another 287 wounded for the whole campaign in Crete during 18 days of actions and main combats where they see it in 4 of such nattle , so there is an exaggeration how many were killed that day for certain .German reports losses on that day claim only 47 casulties . In entite Crete campsing only 263 are reported to be burried from entire campain

Over my lifetime I have seen this action in #ww2 along with the erroneous notion that the war was fought for Jews reach almost religious levels. Perhaps in a few more decades things will settle down and the current #MeOverEveryone politics will allow previous history to re-emerge and common discourse will resume. Best wishes.☘️📚
